Approved Grants

Following is a list of grants that have been approved for the 2010-2011 school year:

  • $1175 Supplies for the 1st grade to make shadow boxes featuring items from Maine beaches.
  • $300 Contribution to Istar the Whale's visit to the 1st grade
  • $300 Contribution to Mr. & Mrs. Fish's visit to the Kindergarten
  • $444 Commemorative Plates focusing on the history of the State of Maine incorporating social studies, writing and art for three 4th grade classrooms
  • $1,500 "Wee Needs" grant – to pay for needed classroom supplies, such as tissues, markers, pencils, etc.
  • $309 Additional funding for the 4th grade Visiting Artist program
  • $1,200 Day-long visit from Stan Davis, a nationally reknowned counselor, who met with students, faculty and parents regarding school climate, specifically peer aggression and bullying (requested by Bri Gallagher – school counselor)
  • $358 Additional funding for the Kindergarten Visiting Artist program
  • $60 Matting and framing of artwork to be displayed at the Portland Museum of Art (requested by Maryjane Johnson, PC Art teacher)
  • $231 Disposable cameras, photopaper, and film processing for a writing/photo essay project for Linda Taylor's 4th grade class (Tara Bucci's long-term substitute)
  • $60 Scholastic minibooks and printables for the 1st grade
  • $150 for motivational pencils for Mr. Shields
  • $913 for two incubators for Foss science unit for the Kindergarten
  • $135 for registration fee for Odyssey of the Mind program for grades K-4
  • $150 for 2 Flip Video Cameras for the 4th Grade Team
  • $5,100 for the Math Masters Program for 3rd & 4th grade

Following is a list of grants that were approved for the 2009-10 school year:

  • $93 for a DVD burner for the 1st grade to burn the pod-casts they've made throughout the year onto a DVD for each student to bring home
  • $134 to Pam Vose for a 2-DVD video modeling program for children with HFA, Aspergers and other non-verbal learning disorders
  • $1,268 to Mary Jane Johnston for two art display boards
  • $364 for Children's Museum of Maine Outreach – The Story of Istar
  • $63 for thank you gift certificates to the Mentors from the High School
  • $294 for 3 sets of Jen Jacobson Mentor Texts – fictional writing support for the 3rd grade
  • $500 for "Mr. and Mrs. Fish" (Deb and Jeff Sandler) to teach a segment for the Kindergarten.
  • $510 for a projector mount and cables for Mrs. Sampson's classroom smart board
  • $380 for "Brain Gym" DVDs and music CDs for each 1st grade classroom. The DVDs & CDs help to stimulate the brain and help students focus.
  • $192 for the 4th grade to cover additional expenses for visiting artist Mimi Carpenter
  • $867 each for 2 ceiling-mount projectors for Ms. Ham (3rd grade) & Ms. Vita-Taylor's (4th grade) classrooms. These projectors are compatible with smart boards
  • $138 for a Bluetooth mouse for 2 4th grade classrooms to enable students to direct technology within the classroom
  • $25 donation to the Cumberland County Co-Op Extension for an incubator "loaner" for the Kindergarten to raise chicks in the spring
  • $1,212 for a membership to Ruth's Resources — a source of a loads of useful supplies for classrooms — for the entire school
  • $1,938 for a smart board for 3rd grade teacher Cameron Rosenblum*
  • $1,294 for two science kits of the solar system for the 4th grade science curriculum
  • $98 to David Shields for his motivational pencil program – the kids really love it!
  • $124 for Mentor fictionalal writing resource books for 3rd grade teacher support
  • $393 for supplies and equipment for gym classes
  • $4,000 for math support to bolster the 3rd and 4th math curriculum
  • $345 for three years' worth of novelty items for the Kindergarten store to re-inforce the coin study program
  • $977 to Ann Valente for a smart board projector and all necessary accoutrements to get it operational. Mrs. Valente was awarded the smart board with Scholastic Dollars but these items are essential for it to be fully-functional.*
  • $102 for headsets for Mrs. Tweedy's room
  • $836 to purchase two additional sets of Literacy Support for Literary Intervention lesson guides for use by the K-3 literacy teachers
  • $155 to 1st grade teacher Julie Nickerson for three seat cushions for OT
  • $209 for three sets of Jen Jacobsen mentor texts to support the 4th grade fictional writing program
  • $500 for a therapeutic horseback riding program to benefit children in Pond Cove with special needs, co-funded by CEEF

* The PCPA budget has a distinct line item in its budget for $10,000 to fund innovative technology. These grants came out of this fund.
